Grants for Making Environmental Science Equal, Diverse and Inclusive (UK)

Deadline: 11-Oct-21

The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is offering grants for Making Environmental Science Equal, Diverse and Inclusive.

This opportunity aims to give flexibility and uplift to organisations, or consortia of organisations, to explore and improve EDI within their environmental science disciplines, with a lead organisation (and with wider organisational involvement encouraged) and lead to greater diversity in environmental sciences.

Objectives

The objectives are to:

tackle the specific EDI challenges facing an academic team or department or a discipline in a wider sense
test, verify and further define effective approaches to improve EDI within their specified remit
bring together academics to raise awareness of the opportunities for increasing diversity within the environmental sciences
provide new evidence for the improvement of EDI within disciplines in the form of written case studies and for award holders to participate at a NERC organised knowledge exchange virtual event by October 2022.
Funding Information

ligible researchers can request between £50,000 and £100,000.
The latest start date for projects funded under this opportunity is 1 December 2021 and they must be complete by 31 May 2022.
UKRI won’t fund

This opportunity will not cover:

activities or provisions that they would expect your host organisation to provide, or that it’s required to provide by law
equipment over £10,000 (anything under £10,000 is a directly incurred other consumable)
extra funding over the cash-limit to support parental leave or sick leave costs. Where required, those costs can be funded from the grant (as per the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) terms and conditions up to the cash-limit only).
No associated PhD studentships can be requested under this opportunity.
Eligibility Criteria

You must be employed by an eligible UK research institution to apply.
Individuals wishing to apply and be named as a principal investigator or co-investigator can only be listed on one application. If the applicant is listed as a principal investigator on one application then they cannot be listed on another application as a co-investigator.
PDRAs cannot act as the lead proposer but can be named as a recognised researcher if they have helped develop the proposal.
The proposal can include funding requests for EDI experts who are not based at eligible organisations through the use of subcontracting conditions. However, NERC would not expect the funding for the collective subcontracting costs for EDI experts to be more than 25% of the awarded funding.
