The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. Over 800 people from more than 70 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.

The Swiss Centre for International Health (SCIH) of Swiss TPH provides policy advice, project design and management in the area of national and global health with the aim to strengthen health systems and improve health service delivery. Short term consultants as: “Gender equality expert”

Our work is integrated in a multidisciplinary team with the aim to monitor performance and strengthen health systems in international settings. Within our various short and long term mandates, we aim at identifying a pool of consultants in gender equality to complete the expertise of our teams with experience especially in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

• Advanced university degree (Masters or higher) in the social sciences (i.e. sociology, demography, psychology, political science, anthropology, social policy or economics), public health, public policy, public administration, international development, or in an area relevant to gender equality sectoral work (e.g. Health, Nutrition, WASH, Education, Child Protection, Social Inclusion, HIV/AIDs, etc.)
• Academic credentials in gender are strong assets
• Minimum ten years of progressively responsible professional experience and demonstrated track record of having undertaken and led substantial programming and/or research on gender and development
• Minimum 10 years of extensive experience in the gender equality sphere from assessment of policies to development and implementation of social development and gender strategies in programs at national level
• At least 5 years’ experience in a developing country and/or resource poor settings
• Experience in designing, implementing, managing, and delivering results-based programs on gender and development or any other cross cutting program, especially at country/field level, experience in emergency response settings is an asset
• Knowledge of international/regional agreements and initiatives on gender (UN, CEDAW, Beijing, etc.)
• Up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge and experience of EU development, policies, instruments and facilities
• Evidence of good understanding of access to health and education is an asset
• Experience in social development planning and management in adolescent development-related areas
• Solid analytical, problem solving, writing and reporting skills together with excellent spoken communication skills essential
• Organizational development and capacity building experience
• Demonstrated experience in managing a team of experts
• Excellent command of English AND French (speaking & writing) required
• Fluency in another UN language (Spanish or Portuguese) an asset
