PSYCHIATRISTS

Psychiatrists and psychologists perform a variety of tasks with MSF, depending on the project and the context: within a hospital program, psychiatric consultations, addressing specific trauma (armed conflicts, sexual violence), certain illnesses (AIDS, TB) and/or treating minors.

Psychiatrists collaborate with MSF health personnel to promote the integration of psychiatric care as part of our primary and secondary health services. The activity includes clinical work, as well as managing and training national staff. The ability to work in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary team is a must. In the majority of our programs, it is national staff (usually made up of psychologists) that ensure the continuity of care of our patients. International mental health staff are responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Propose treatment for patients suffering from psychiatric issues while taking the cultural context into consideration.
  2. Organize and participate in group therapy sessions.
  3. Provide support to the project and the team by sharing ideas on how to improve our care, in accordance with MSF’s strategy and objectives.
    – Oversee the diagnosing and treating of mental health illnesses according to MSF guidelines.
  4. Identify the training needs of the staff and organize workshops to improve their practice.
  5. Ensure that MSF guidelines and medical treatments (psychotropic drugs listed in standard MSF guidelines), are available.
  6. Ensure that the necessary information is collected and made available to provide adequate treatment of the patient.
    – Evaluate existing in-country psychiatric care, psychiatric hospitals in particular.
