The starting salary package for this position is £84,300 GBP / approx. $103,495 USD including all allowances

About MAG in West Africa:

MAG supports the development of countries emerging from conflict by finding and destroying the explosive remnants of war, so that communities can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury. The main area of focus in MAG’s programmes across West Africa is Arms Management and Destruction (AMD) work, working with national defence and security authorities towards the safe storage, management and destruction of weapons and munitions.

About the role:

This is an exciting time to join the MAG West Africa team, which is undergoing a period of change. As the senior technical representative in the region, you will be responsible for leading, overseeing and safely managing all Arms Management and Destruction (AMD) operations the region, in accordance with International Standards, guidelines and MAG Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring that these are consistent with MAG’s policies and mandate. Working closely with and reporting to the Regional Director, you will be responsible for managing all MAG international technical staff in the region (excluding Mali), providing high quality technical input into proposals, ensuring smooth operations and generating quality data for reports. As a member of the Regional Senior Management Team, you will assist and support the Regional Director, and Regional Programmes Managers in developing the regional and country programmes strategy, plans, proposals and budgets with regards to technical training and operations in line with MAG’s mission and mandate.

About you:

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of implementing a breadth of AMD activities in challenging environments, and extensive technical knowledge in a range of AMD skills, including construction, IMAS, IATG and MOSAIC. You will have the ability to contribute technical knowledge to proposals and reports, as well as the ability to plan and organise. You will have excellent representation and negotiation skills and the ability to build capacity of national teams, and to establish and maintain productive partnerships with donors and partners. Understanding of difficult security contexts as well as the limited possibility of deployments into remote areas is crucial. You will have excellent people and project management skills with the ability to coordinate, design, manage and report on activities simultaneously. Previous experience of working in a senior technical position within a similar organisation is essential. A patient, tactful and diplomatic approach will be required in the challenging environments MAG works in. You will need to demonstrate considerable experience of working strategically to ensure the quality and efficiency of MAG’s work.

Fluency in French is required, working knowledge of English is desirable.

  • Salary: The starting salary package for this position is £84,300 per annum and this increases with service.
  • Accommodation: MAG will provide accommodation in-country.
  • Leave: We recognise our staff work hard and need the appropriate time out to stay motivated. You’ll have a minimum of six/eight weeks out of the programme per year (for permanent contracts)
  • Flights: MAG provides three international flights home per year
  • Insurance: All international staff are automatically covered by MAG’s comprehensive insurance package including: Personal accident and medical expenses insurance; Death by natural causes insurance and access to 24-hour medical assistance including evacuation and repatriation.
